Jubilee Tenth Basin Women’s Forum

On December 2, 2024, the “Women and Society” Association (WSA), in partnership with HELVETAS under the framework of the National Water Resources Management Project (NWRMP) in Tajikistan, with financial support from the Swiss government (SDC), held the Jubilee Tenth Basin Women’s Forum“Roles and Prospects for Women’s Participation in IWRM” in the Tajik part of the Syr Darya River Basin. The event aimed to enhance women’s involvement in decision-making processes. This platform provides an opportunity for women water users to expand their capabilities and advocate for women’s interests toward achieving gender equality in the water sector, considering the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and a bottom-up approach.
The forum was attended by Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Ms. Khudobakhsh Sharifa; First Deputy of the Committee on Women and Family Affairs under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Nurullozoda Firuza; representatives of government bodies; development partners SDC, HELVETAS, the International Secretariat for Water, ACTED, UNDP, NGOs, WUAs, and farmers. Guests from Uzbekistan, including representatives of Caritas Switzerland and CAREC, as well as guests from Kazakhstan and a representative from the University of Geneva, also participated in the forum.
During the event, panel discussions were held to highlight successful examples of women’s leadership in the water resource sector, as well as strategies to overcome barriers women face. The speakers provided valuable recommendations to enhance and involve women at decision-making levels in the water sector.
A photo exhibition was organized at the forum, featuring drawings by schoolchildren on the theme “Water for Life”, photographs of the Forum’s activities, and samples of water-saving technologies.
The forum also developed key action directions for the Basin Women’s Forum (BWF) for 2025, including recommendations for joint efforts and gender-sensitive actions.
